Pos Indonesia boasts a rich history that began long ago. The very first post office was established in Batavia (now Jakarta) on August 26, 1746, by General G.W. Baron van Imhoff. Its primary purpose was to ensure the secure delivery of letters, particularly for traders traveling between offices outside Java and those coming and going from the Netherlands. Initially known as PTT (Post, Telegraph, and Telephone), this entity was primarily focused on public service rather than commercial operations. As national development progressed, PTT evolved into Perusahaan Negara Pos dan Telekomunikasi (PN Postel). With rapid advancements in postal and telecommunications, PN Postel transitioned in 1965 to Perusahaan Negara Pos dan Giro (PN Pos dan Giro). In 1978, it was further restructured into Perum Pos dan Giro, becoming a unified entity responsible for both postal and giro services, both domestically and internationally. After seventeen years as Perum, in June 1995, the organization was rebranded as PT Pos Indonesia (Persero).
Today, Pos Indonesia continues to innovate and expand its services. The organization operates a vast network, including around 24,000 service points, covering 100% of cities and districts, 100% of sub-districts, and 42% of villages, including 940 locations in some of the most remote areas of Indonesia. With technological advancements, Pos Indonesia now boasts over 3,800 online post offices and mobile services in major cities. Each service point is part of a robust and integrated network, supported by a postal code system designed to streamline delivery processes across Indonesia.
